Northern Zone

The northern zone is characterized by having vast agriculture in an area that includes in the province of Alajuela, the cantons of San Carlos, Los Chiles, Guatuso, Sarapiquí district of the Central canton, Río Cuarto district of the Grecia canton, and the district of Peñas Blancas of the canton of San Ramón. In the province of Heredia the districts of Puerto Viejo and La Virgen of the canton of Sarapiquí.

LIMITS
To the north with the border with Nicaragua, to the south with the Cordillera de Guanacaste, to the east with the Chirripó River, and to the west it borders the canton of Upala.

RELIEF
It is a great plain of 100 to 200 meters. high, formed by the Guatuso, San Carlos, and Sarapiquí plains and their respective hydrographic basins of the Frío, San Carlos, and Sarapiquí river. The rivers are long and mighty, they are used for the navigation of smaller boats. These plains are filled with volcanic and alluvial materials.

ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES
The production represents 4.6% of the country’s total. The main activities are livestock, agriculture of basic grains, sugar cane, coffee, cocoa, plantain, banana, and banana. In addition to the regional headquarters, Ciudad Quesada is the commercial center and has health, education, financial services, etc.

WEATHER
It is hot, the average temperature is 24 ° C. Precipitations near the Atlantic and in the Central Volcanic Mountain range reach 4500 mm per year; towards the North and West, they are decreasing, approaching 2000 mm per year. While in the plain that irrigates the Chirripó river there are no months without rain, in Los Chiles there are up to 3 months that it does not rain.

BIOGRAPHY
In this region, there is a humid tropical forest, which is transforming as a result of the rainfall into a mixed forest of height.
