Surfing in Costa Rica

Surfing in Costa Rica is a very popular sport amongst tourists and locals alike. Unlike what you see in most Hollywood movies, the local surfers in Costa Rica are very friendly and the good waver all throughout the Atlantic and Pacific are shared by all.

The are many very good breakpoints for surfing in Costa Rica along the Northern and Central Pacific Coast, and some also very good spots but harder to reach on the South Pacific.

The Atlantic Coast is a little bit different with mostly calm waters, although you can find several point breaks along the coast. Surfing in Costa Rica camps and lodges can be found everywhere.

They are generally comfortable, small, and cheaper than regular hotel accommodations, usually targeting the young on-the-move surfing crowd, however as in most countries, you can find all types of accommodations on the most popular and not so tourist-driven destinations.

Some of the most popular Surfing destinations in the country are Witches Rock, Tamarindo – Playa Grande, Playa Negra, Nosara, Mal PaĆ­s, and Montezuma in the Northern Pacific.

From there on the South pacific Uvita, Drake Matapalo and Pavones are ideal spots. On the Caribbean side of Costa Rica surfing can be engaged in on the following spots: Westfalia, Puerto Viejo, Cahuita, and Manzanillo.
